Help us build a clearer picture of the music industry workforce

First Music Contact, alongside Performing Arts Forum and other creative industries and arts resource organisations, are working together to campaign for fairer, more sustainable careers across the cultural sector. Our focus is to campaign for music businesses to get the same level of sector support as other industries. Your participation in this survey is essential.

The more responses we receive, the stronger the evidence base we can bring to Government, funders and partners.

We anticipate that this year the research will highlight the chronic under-resourcing of the sector resulting in the precarity experienced by musicians, music sector workers and music companies, unmanageable workloads and consequently the loss of skills, knowledge and talent as people leave the sector. The research results will be used to support advocacy for sustainable investment and to inform future policy and funding development.

Confidential
Rest assured that all responses will remain anonymous and will be aggregated in all reports. So please answer as fully as you can. If you can’t answer a question exactly, please give us your best estimate.

We need to calculate robust average levels of pay for employees, independent musicians and freelance music industry workers. This means we will ask you about your organisation’s salary and pay rates and fees so please have information about your 2024 salaries and fees to hand.

In return you will receive a digest of the salaries, fees and hourly rates paid for a wide range of roles by the different parts of the music industry.

This survey should take you around 20 minutes to complete depending on the size of your team.
The deadline for responses is 5pm on Friday 19th December
The results will be published early in the New Year.

If you’ve any questions, just email our researcher heather@heathermaitland.co.uk
